This guava paste with cheese is a simple Colombian dessert that only requires two ingredients and it's delicious.
What is Bocadillo con Queso?
It is a simple and easy to make Colombian dessert also known as casado in some parts of the country. If you are thinking that this is not a dish, but rather a couple of ingredients on a plate, you'd be right! A slice of white cheese with a slice of guava paste, but the combination of salty cheese and sweet guava paste is one of those heavenly combinations that you simply must try if you haven't already.
What Kind of Cheese?
You can use white cheese (queso blanco), queso fresco, mozarella cheese, feta, brie or cream cheese. They will all work beautifully with the guava paste.
What is Guava Paste?
It's a sweet paste made with fresh guavas and sugar. You can find it in Latin markets, online or at your local supermarket in the International aisle.
How to Serve it?
Serve it as a dessert or an appetizer, cut into little pieces. This is a very simple, but absolutely delicious combination.

I love the combo of guava paste and white cheese, but I am curious about the paste in your photo because it shows 2 layers. What is the second, lighter layer?

The sweet and salty combination makes me think of goat cheese, honey, and figs--another excellent combination. What is the beige-colored stuff surrounding the guava paste?
Reply
Erica
Joan and D.- That is dulce de leche.

My Dad had a small candy factory many years ago in Puerto Rico and he would make the guava paste topped off with hard dulce de leche.
We call your guava and cheese "Romeo y Julieta"
Thanks for "la nostalgia".

Bocadillo con Queso is probably one of the best things in life. specially in Colombia.... where i am from. I'd compare it to the classical doughnut.... Everyone has tried it at some point of their lifes here in the states... Bocadillo con queso can be served as an appetizer, snack, desset, you can eat it alone, with a tall glass of MILO which is the american Nesquick version lol or got chocolate... It is absolutely delish... I read a post asking what the second layer of the bocadillo (gueva paste) is , it is complicated to explain but i;d say its like a litte caramel coated layer. this is called arequipe in Colombia. sometimes the bocadillo comes with out it... Also the bocadillo (guava) can be really soft with the arequipe in the middle or it can come in little rolls. it varies all shapes and sixes. bu pretty much its composed of the guava, any kind of cheese.. (try one that is not that salty, like queso blanco o mozarella, campesino, colombiano) and sugar coating on top!!!!!!!! I hope you all enjot this wonderful dessert!!!!

First time commenter here, Erica, but long time admirer of your wonderful blog! I know I'm kind of late to the party but just wanted to add that I think this would also be phenomenal with brie, mascarpone (Italian cream cheese) or even buttery muenster! I'm salivating right now at the thought. I've always loved Guava, though but here in the states, it is not a popular fruit. I know many here in North Carolina who have never even heard of it. I'm from California, where I first tasted in a neighbors backyard, but I've never been served anything anywhere containing the paste. Right now, I'm thinking that this just might become my new go-to company dessert or appetizer recipe! Or quickie snack when unexpected visitors show up! What a wonderful idea. Thank you so much for sharing so many of your countries wonderful recipes with us.

Hello...Greetings from Atlanta Georgia. You are one of my very favorite food blogs!! I wanted to ask a question. I've enjoyed guava paste in bread from Colombian restaurants.. but I've never purchased the paste myself. This is almost a stupid question..because I actually adore guava paste and there might not be any left after i open the package.......But how do you store guava paste after you open the package. Does refrigeration change the texture? I am just an American southern girl...but i enjoy Colombian foods..especially want to learn more desserts... two of our children have married two wonderful people from Colombian. I like to make dishes for them...and now I want to try some appetizers and desserts. Thank you so much for your wonderful food blog. ~

We made this as an appetizer for our pig roast party and it was great! Super easy but a great pairing of the sweet, tangy guava with the creaminess of the cheese.
