Why Teach Cursive?

  • Signatures – signing your name in cursive is a more elegant way to add a personalized touch.
  • Fine Motor Skills – learning and writing cursive uses a different part of the brain than regular writing and uses different muscle memory. The pencil is held at different angles, different pressures and the letter sizes are different too. Writing in cursive requires more control and coordination of the hand than printing, leading to better motor skills.
  • Ability To Read Cursive – many important documents are written in cursive. This includes old notes or journals of our ancestors. Also, many people still write in cursive. Learning how each letter is formed and strung together is important to be able to read cursive writing.
  • Confidence – the art of writing beautifully can instill a sense of accomplishment and pride, especially since writing is a huge staple in society. Watching your handwriting develop over time feels good.
