What is Groundhog Day?

The history of Groundhog Day is a public holiday celebrated in both the United States of America and Canada! It comes from a United States Pennsylvania Dutch superstition dating back to the 1800s.

On February 2nd every year the groundhog, named Punxsutawney Phil, comes up out of his burrow to see his shadow on a clear day. If the groundhog’s shadow is seen as a result the groundhog will then retreat into his den for another six weeks of winter. If it is cloudy and he does not see his shadow, that means that Spring will arrive early.

These Groundhog Day worksheets are a great addition and a great way to get kids involved in learning about the weather, math skills, as well as some interesting facts. Like the fact that Punxsutawney Phil is only right about 40% of the time. Doh! I know I am always hoping for an early Spring.
