Valentine’s day will be coming up soon. I will admit, I am not a big fan of Valentine’s Day. To quote one of my sisters, “It is just national sex day.”

However, I do lovevalentine’s day recipes. I mean come on, the majority ofvalentine’s day recipes is CHOCOLATE! I do love chocolate!

Red Velvet Recipe

One common theme you will see withvalentine’s day recipes is ared velvet recipe. What exactly is red velvetthough? Ared velvet recipe is:

  • Red velvet cake
  • Traditionally a red, red-brown color
  • Layered with white cream cheese frosting

Dutch Chocolate

Originally the cocoa used in red velvet cakes was from non-Dutched, anthocyanin-rich cocoa. Which gave the reddish color to the cake. Now we just use food coloring to dutch chocolate to achieve that reddish look of a red velvet recipe.

Cream Cheese Glaze

Cream cheese frosting for red velvet cupcakes is what is commonly used. When I decided I wanted to make red velvet brownies, I knew I wanted to emulate that cream cheese frosting, but how? The cream cheese glaze and drizzle it onto this red velvet chocolate that is how!

Ingredients

Red Velvet Brownies

  • 1/2 cup butter (at room temperature)
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 1/4 cups flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring

Cream Cheese Drizzle

  • 1/2 cup butter (at room temperature)
  • 4 ounces cream cheese (soften)
  • 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 4 ounces white chocolate
  • 3 tablespoon milk

Instructions

Red Velvet Brownies

  1. Preheat oven to 350. Spray 8 x 8 pan with cooking spray and set aside.
  2. In a small bowl, mix cocoa powder, food coloring and 1 teaspoon of the vanilla to form a paste. Set aside.
  3. With an electric mixer, cream butter and sugar till light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, then add second teaspoon of vanilla. With mixer on medium, beat in cocoa paste. Add flour and salt, and mix just until combined.
  4. Spread in pan. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

Cream Cheese Drizzle

  1. Melt the white chocolate according to the instructions on your package and set it aside. Cream butter and cream cheese with mixer till fluffy.
  2. Add vanilla. Slowly mix in powdered sugar, then white chocolate. Add enough milk to reach desired consistency.
  3. You can either frost the brownies, or scoop some into a pastry bag, and pipe on diagonal lines onto the brownies. Than drag a knife through the lines the opposite ways crating 'V's" into the frosting lines.
  4. Cut up the brownies and ENJOY!
