Trimmer Comparison: Husqvarna 525LS vs STIHL FS 111 RX

If you’re regularly tackling thick vegetation, tough weeds, and long grass, you need a trimmer that you can rely on. Whether you’re a busy contractor or a homeowner with some serious trimming to tackle, a durable and versatile trimmer is key for helping you achieve precise and clean results while saving time and energy.

At Carl’s Mower & Saw, we offer a wide range of options from leading brands like Husqvarna® and STIHL®. In this review, we’ll compare the Husqvarna 525LS and the STIHL FS 111 RX to help you figure out which trimmer you need to power your outdoors.

Husqvarna 525LS Review:

Starting with the Husqvarna 525LS, this commercial-grade trimmer packs an impressive punch for its weight class.

Pros:

  1. Power to weight ratio: The 525LS is equipped with a powerful engine that delivers excellent performance, making it suitable for heavy-duty trimming tasks. As far as commercial-grade trimmers go, the 525LS is light – just 10.14lbs! Lighter weight = less fatigue and strain.
  2. Easy to maintain: Need to check/change your air filter? No problem! There’s just one thumb screw to take out and then boom. You’re in!
  3. Comfortable to run: The whole handle system with the throttle has an anti-vibration system, plus the rubber-coated loop handle is a large enough diameter to accommodate most hands comfortably.
  4. Durable: The engine and large fuel tank are protected by a heavy-duty metal skid plate. The cables and primer are all protected as well. This is great for when you throw it in the trailer and roll out.
  5. Smart technology: The 525LS is compatible with Husqvarna’s digital services like Fleet Services™ and Husqvarna Connect to help you get the most out of your equipment.
  6. Versatile: In addition to running as a traditional line trimmer, the 525LS is also compatible with a number of blades for clearing heavier grasses and weeds.

Cons:

  1. The throttle lever sticks out and is a little flimsy, so there is a chance of it getting broken off.
  2. In our opinion, this is not the best tool for brush cutting.

STIHL FS 111 RX Review:

Now let’s turn our attention to the STIHL FS 111 RX, a versatile trimmer known for its powerful performance and commercial-grade features.

Pros:

  1. Easy to start: The FS 111 RX features a simple 3-step start procedure: pump the fuel primer, set the choke and pull the starter cord. It also allows you to turn off the engine with the press of a button.
  2. Power: The FS 111 RX is a high-powered trimmer (1.4hp compared to 1.34 with the 525LS)
  3. Fuel Efficient: The FS 111 RX’s fuel efficient engine and 24oz fuel capacity mean you get more work in before you have to stop and refuel.
  4. Low Maintenance: Performing routine maintenance like changing the spark plug & air filter is easy. This saves you from needing to have it serviced by your dealer.
  5. Multipurpose: The FS 111 RX is compatible with a number of STIHL trimmer heads, offering the ability to choose what’s going to work best for you.
  6. Comfortable operation: The STIHL anti-vibration system is designed to minimize operator fatigue and enhance overall comfort while working. Plus the adjustable loop handle and ability to run the FS 111 RX with a harness give you more options to help you trim with ease.

Cons:

  1. Weighing 11 lbs, it is a little heavier than the Husqvarna 525LS, so you’re trading off weight for more power.
  2. Unlike the nearly identical STIHL FS 111 R, the FS 111 RX is not compatible with a blade head.

Is There a Winner?

Whether you’re working on a golf course, in parks, around a farm or maneuvering around trees, fences, and garden beds, you need a trimmer that is powerful and nimble. Choosing between the Husqvarna 525LS and the STIHL FS 111 RX really comes down to what works best for you.

These are two incredibly popular models for very good reason — they deliver on power, performance, and versatility. True, the STIHL FS 111 RX offers slightly more power, but the Husqvarna 525LS may be more ideal for longer periods of use due to its lighter weight. The 525LS can technically run a few different blade options, but if brushcutting is your main aim, then we might suggest looking elsewhere.

Something else to keep in mind is the support and service available from your local dealer. A reliable dealer is essential for safeguarding your investment and providing ongoing support for your equipment.
